A Simple Plan
Directed By Sam Raimi
While the rest of the world is still in shock after the departure of Jason Priestley from 90210
I am still in shock from the new Sam Raimi, A Simple Plan, which (Let's play
Siskel and Ebert, even if they make such announcements only weeks before the awards every year) is one of the best movies I've seen this year and is worth a best supporting actor award nomination for Billy Bob Thornton.
Simple Plan features a sleepy middle class town in the dead of winter à la Fargo that's disturbed by an unexpected bag of $4 million that has fallen from the sky.The "lucky" finders, Bill Paxton, his stunted brother Billy Bob Thornton and his buddy decide to hide the money to share later on. From there a machiavellian mechanism begins, which leads to an inevitable chaos.
But where FARGO turns ludicrous (worshippers of the Cohen bros' genius will probably stone me ), and Tarantino explodes in a deluge of shootings with De Niro and his magic bazooka, Sam Raimi focuses on the psychology of the characters. And it works. Raimi plays a game of loaded dice. The dumbest and smartest are not the ones you may think, while Bridget Fonda's supporting role is equally important, and Billy Bob's double-talk confuses our belief.
As for running time, the two hours never seem too long, thanks to a good train of events and the excellent acting, especially Billy Bob Thornton's, whose nuanced wacko roles have been recognized.
Add a few twists in the plot, and this thriller about the drift of values faced with greed won't leave you indifferent.
