I must admit that I had never seen a Child's Play movie until Bride Of Chucky, whose tongue-in-cheek concept seemed interesting enough as well as the presence of Jennifer Tilly reincarnated as the bride for me to rent it. Even though I'm not really a horror aficionado, I really enjoyed Bride Of Chucky and to my great surprise, Seed of Chucky aka Bride Of Chucky 2 pushed the boundaries of the first installment into brand new territory, offering a satire of Hollywood and daring to be controversial.
Because I know this environment, I'm usually a sucker for films set within the film industry, which might not be the case for everybody. In addition, Wes Craven already overused a post-modern take on horror films, whether it's Freddy or with the Scream franchise.
While Seed of Chucky doesn't innovate at that level, it's still a treat to see Jennifer Tilly playing on her own slutty image, a caricature of herself on screen. The picture even brushes with the clichés of rap stardom through Redman, also playing himself.
But what makes this Chucky entry even more valuable is how far the filmmakers were ready to push the envelope, in terms of provocation and bad taste. And the presence of John Waters should give you a hint about how far they were ready to go, which involves Chucky in various sexual acts, a transvestite puppet and the killing of none other that Britney Spears. If you're a fan of Waters' films, you will certainly laugh out loud here, which makes Seed of Chucky a success, not as a Horror flick, but as an uncompromising dark comedy.
