Alanis Morrissette
Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie
Alanis deserves some respect for her new record. It’s a treat to listen to.
One of the qualities of the album is that it’s an honest effort. While Jewel tries far too hard to show how earnest and vulnerable she is (and comes off cloying and annoying in the process), it’s cool to listen to this album without fear of a bad book of poetry being just around the corner.
This album is more reflective than the first, meditating on various themes such as former loves Unsent, and human experience Thank U. That I would be good is one of the more haunting tracks, giving us a peek into vulnerability and allowing oneself to fall before rising again." That I would be loved/even when I numb myself/that I would be good/even when I am overwhelmed."
It’s cliché to say that this is a more mature album. In voicing her quirks and thoughts and repeating verses in songs without turning them into senseless mantras, there is a sense of balance in this album , both musically and lyrically, which ultimately is what it’s all about.
