Holidays are a time of sharing, joy and greatest hits packages from your favorite bands. In a time when it seems like best of collections with only a few questionable "hits" and a shitload of remixes clog the bins of Walmart, the latest releases from No Doubt and Sheryl Crow gather the songs that modern radio is not likely to forget anytime soon and additionally provide a few new radio-friendly gems into the mix.
The Angels of Anaheim have now been around for almost two decades and as a cohesive, creative band whose flamboyant lead singer has been and continues to be the object of media fascination, they've proven that they're not leaving the scene anytime soon. From their early days in The OC to their current MTV dominance they've gone from scruffy punks to playing half-time during the Superbowl. Not bad at all. From the girl power pop of "Just A Girl" and the early tune "Trapped In A Box" all the bases are covered on this collection. Their range also becomes more apparent: from the heartbreak anthem "Don't Speak" and the puppy love of "Running" to the infectious dancehall of "Hella Good" their experimentation gives them an edge. Their cover of "It's My Life" by Talk Talk is a continuation of their retro-80's/Jamaican-dancehall-with-a-twist album, Rock Steady. While no song that has been played to death on the radio is missing (and even for people that rarely listen to the radio overkill is the first word that comes to mind) there is one criticism: given their captivating energy onstage one wonders why there aren't any live takes on The Singles 1992-2003. It would have mixed it up a bit, given it a little more oomph. Unless of course a live album is in the pipes. Hmmm......
