Combining sci-fi imagery with noisy guitars and drum machines, The Raveonettes are the fruit of the telescoping of the Jesus & Mary Chain and the Cramps.
The kitsch Danish duo lives in a world populated with aliens and monsters and has chosen to recite its childish talesor nightmareswith a strong dose of noisy rock. The Raveonettes belong to a post-punk new wave revival with the likes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Interpol.
Primitive drum-machines, adulterated voices, abrasive guitars and feedback galore, the formula is obviously not new. The band claims its strong influences even in the titles of the songs: "Ghost Riders" obviously refers to Suicide while to a certain degree The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Cramps and My Bloody Valentine never leave the musical landscape.
Without ever trying to reinvent itself, The Raveonettes seduce with their fresh and off-handed approach stripped of any pretension, offering a succession of short but sharp noisy tirades. From the single "Attack of the Ghost Riders" to "Beat City", one undergoes a sonic assault that's difficult to resist.
But beyond the homage, the music of The Raveonettes, like that of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, seduces by its capacity to fill the vacuum left by the Reid brothers. The time has come for the return of the Jesus & Mary Chain.
