Liquid music cascades out of a faucet in a grand range of stylistic melodies in Everpresent's self-titled release. Unable to completely define its genre isn't a bad thing; the compilation safely fits into an alternative rock category as it does into electro new wave. The vocals and instruments range from that great sound of 80s pop and 90s alternative rock into a newly defined CD for the millennium.
"Embrace Me" combines a sexy lounge vibe with romantic sounds of waterfalls within organic percussion and bass, a unique use of layers makes the track unpredictable, in a good way, and hints at the entertaining set Everpresent must put worth when heard live. The progression of a deep bass guitar and the flowing sound of stream eventually lead into "You Save Me" and finishes with "Drowning" both of these tracks play with the hot 80s pop sounds while incorporating a deep rhythm. Matt Cahoon's diverse talents prove themselves throughout the production as vocalist and on keyboard, sequencing, and drums aside from being the key songwriter. The lyrics bring the listener into a fantastical ride through love, lust, and loss, the key elements to any emotional song.
On the more recent follow-up presenting new singles and remixes, "Silence Speaks" opens with a rich resonance of male and female vocals, a gentle humming melody and rigid guitar accompaniment. This compilation veers farther away from the show choir sounds of the first and swims deeper into a darker and sexier sound that would fit over candlelight or in a purple-lit concert. Remixes experiments into ambient with its already existing new-age vibe, a direction that fits well, track 4 could work for an Everquest musical backdrop just as easily as a great in concert interlude. Either way, the musical talent of Matt Cahoon is evident and these CDs pave the way for a promising band that I'd like to see live.
