Narrow Path is the debut album from Josh One, who gained fame on dance floors with the single "Contemplation".
His music is a sleek jazzy-lounge, filled with round basses and charming feminine vocals murmured on a mid-tempo vibe. Guests include MCs Aloe Blacc, Micah 9, Marshall Goodman (Sublime), Printz Board (Black Eyed Peas) and singer Kandace Lindsey. Arrangements are rich and minimalist at the same time and the tracks, while forming a cohesive ensemble, take various directions, from typical lounge—"Midnight Samba"—to hip-hop—"Less Traveled"—and R&B—"Miss Me"; the eponymous closer is even a surprising acoustic ballad.
Josh One's songs are certainly not transcending at an artistic level as he pens tunes that are destined to the background and, by nature, formulaic. This is the kind of music you listen to while drinking cocktails in your pink plastic space-type Ikea chair or while driving at dawn, coming back from a night of excess, with the urge to listen to something that will keep you awake without being aggressive.
Narrow Path should satisfy the fans of compilations such as Hotel Costes and Buddha Bar. This is a pleasant CD that knows how to keep a mid-tempo vibe alive in the background, thus assuming the purpose of its existence.
Narrow Path is released as a dual disc, featuring the regular album on the CD side and another version remixed in 5.1 as well as extras on the DVD side.
