Waltz for Koop: Alternative Takes is a remix of Waltz for Koop, one of the most interesting releases on the electronic jazz scene in 2002. The Swedish duo who blends cool jazzy vocals and instrumentals with electronic beats brought in a few guestsDjs & producers, including Richard Dorfmeisterto slightly recreate this album.
The result is suave and hypnotic. These remixes preserve Koop's French touch approachwith light Brazilian tonesto create a breezy and seductive soundtrack for our chill-out moments.
I'm not a big fan of the guitars that open "Baby" but the song charms you right away. "Tonight" is more upbeat & traditional while "Modal Mile" and "Bright Nights" are reminiscent of the late great Suba. The jazzy & etheral Mark Enochson version of "Summer Sun" and Hird's take on "In a Heartbeat" are some of the great moments of this CD. In a different style, a more urban "Relahin at Club Fuckin" is boosted by Dorfmeister's nervous bass. Fast drum & bass rhythms are a good fit for Carlito's remix of "Summer Sun" but don't really work out on the laid-back "Waltz for Koop".
The remix exercise doesn't always convert well, usually filling in between albums to bring in some additional cash, but these alternative takes are able to create a legitimate album on it own merit, which is a sign of the success of this enterprise.
