Shakira is the Catholic Latin American version of Alanis Morissette or the French Zazie. Her second album, Donde Estan Los Ladrones is lyrically more complex than her debut album. Musically, though, you’d be hard pressed to find a progression. The catchy, danceable pop remains. Add an infectious Alanis-y voice, and damn! she’s one fun revolucionaria.
This record should cast a wider net over U.S. and gringo listeners. First and foremost, she sounds good. This isn't the wretched stuff your Spanish teacher would make you listen to that sounded too cheesy and/or heavily influenced by The Police.
The best songs here kinda sound like the best songs on her previous effort. "Ciega sordomuda" is as catchy as Pies descalzos. And in "No Creo" we get the sense that Shakira may not know what she believes in, but she’s certainly deleted some possibilities. Finally, the cd ends with a homage to her roots, a spicy Arabian track that takes control over your hips.
If you’re looking for sugary energy, don’t pass this one up.
