Once upon a time Mr. Rossdale was the singer of a band called Bush, whose main ability was to get hits from somewhat average songs. This band, which was seen as the radio-friendly UK answer to Nirvana, started with grungy guitars before venturing into electronica. What always amazed me with Bush was that their songs were never strong in harmonies or originality you could call them forgettable but after hearing them many times on the radio, they would end up stuck in your head forever and become part of your life and playlist.
Wanderlust is the debut solo effort from Bush's singer, following a quite interesting electronica track which was featured on the soundtrack of Vin Diesel's action film XXX a few years ago.
Mr. Rossdale, now mostly known as Mr. Gwen Stefani, does not surprising with Wanderlust; he also tries to get his solo career running by going mainstream. The problem is that while his other half certainly caught the current music trend successfully mixing new wave, electro, dance and hip hop to make it big, Mr. Rossdale seems to be stuck in 80's soft rock.
When he's not delivering syrupy ballads ("Love remains the same", "The trouble I'm in"), he embraces a rock sound that lacks Bush's abrasive guitars ("If you're not with us, you're against us") or even goes for U2-like anthems ("Can't stop the world", "Frontline"). This is too bad, knowing that some of these songs ("Another night in the hills", "This is happiness") could have had potential had they been produced with a real rock sound, rather than trying to please the radio waves. Hopefully, next time Mr. Rossdale will get back to his true self, rather than selling out, which by looking at the charts, didn't work out anyway.
