Iris Nova review

The association of vocalist Marilyn Carino and producer Benny Cha Cha, Mudville is one of these musical projects loaded with artsy aspirations, in a jazzy kind of way. Creating a potpourri of genres - from jazz to electronic, world and soul - the duo aims at being a darling of radios such as KCRW and a fixture of intimate venues such as the Hotel Café in Hollywood.

Listen closely to this CD and you will quickly realize that Iris Nova sounds highly prefabricated - not a big surprise knowing that a producer is involved as a musician -, as Mudville tries to hard to resonate with artistry. Mixing ad nauseum various genre arrangements, genres and melodies that don't really go together, the album offers a series of mismatched tunes, a musical mess that lacks homogeneity and personality.

Add to the fact that Carino's voice doesn't really stand out from the crowd, that the lyrics embrace every ridiculous songwriting cliché under the sun with titles such as "Eternity", "The Spanish Gypsy", "Sparkle", "Lotus", "Joy" and chances are you won't walk away impressed.
