The Jesus and Mary Chain Automatic review
|
Darklands can be seen as the most representative creation from the Reid brothers, even though the introduction of a sharp drum machine was not a fully creative decision, but rather the result of the departure of drummer Bobby Gillespie, who stepped behind the mike for electro-rock great Primal Scream. Built on a tone of melancholy, the new direction was clearly established with the track "Darklands", leaving the shadow of their Velvet Underground-tainted debut. But undoubtedly the two singles, "April Skies" and "Happy When It Rains" probably my favorite JAMC song remain as the most emblematic entries, also announcing a series of incisive singles that would later include the likes of "Blues for a Gun". I can still remember buying these two singles a long time ago and feeling the musical excitement of discovering music that would accompany me in my adult life. Even in its most stripped down incarnation, the album doesn't lose its essence, as the haunting "On the Wall" and "About You" attest. Of course, as a Jesus & Mary Chain fan, I would recommend four indispensable albums, but if I was forced to keep only one, it would be Darklands. This new edition features the album remastered in both stereo and 5.1 surround, the videos for "Darklands", "Happy When it Rains", "April Skies" as well as the lyrics. As for the videos, nothing fascinating here, but they will at least give you an idea about where newer bands such as Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Raveonettes got their sound and look.
