I know it might be surprising, but Honey's Dead is my favorite Jesus & Mary Chain album, probably because it's the darkest, the most dangerous and extreme, pushing the boundaries of their sound.

Honey's Dead gloriously brought back the fuzz of Psychocandy, this time associating it with danceable electronic rhythms, the logical continuation of the more primitive approach of electronic and the reflection of a musical era marked by bands such as Happy Mondays and Primal Scream.

While they lowered the tempo, compared to Automatic, the Reid brothers' vocals are more vicious than ever and the songs have a sort of Suicide appeal, not far from industrial.

Any idiot could tell you that "Reverence" sounds like the Stooges' "I wanna be a dog" and Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead", but the song has a life of its own, somewhat being the pinnacle of the shoegazer movement — or noisyrock as we called it in Europe — and it remains one of my favorite JAMC songs. Would you have seen "Reverence" live, like at did at the time, and you would have understood why the band was both the ultimate incarnation of shoegazer and heirs to the Velvet Underground.

Other electrified faves include "Catchfire", "Sugar Ray", and "Teenage Lust" while a few semi-acoustic ballads such as "Far Gone & Out", "Almost Gold" and "Sundown" provide a break between the assaults.

Honey's Dead marked the end of an era, and if you wanted to get an idea about the evolution of noiserock, getting Psychocandy and Honey's Dead, would be the best way to get an idea about this short genre, from its birth to its last breath.

This new dual disc edition includes two mixes of the album, in stereo & 5.1, as well as the videos for "Far Gone & Out", "Almost Gold" and "Reverence" — the cool video here.
