Viva Mexico! Kinky, a grupo de cinco, hails from Monterrey, Mexico. Along with Moenia and Nortec Collective they are next in line to revitalize the current dance music scene. Traditional sounds like samba, batucada and norteño are poured into their electronic music, creating a percussion heavy, highly infectious sound.
"Mas" starts off the album by beginning with some gospel and then quickly escalating into a funky frenzy. Though "Soun Tha Primer Amor" is enveloped in brass and robotic voices, the spoken word lyrics are poetic nonetheless. "Great Spot" and "Field Goal" are continuations of what Nortec Collective began; cutting edge electronica.
Brazilian influences imbue the quintet's album. "Sol" is an energetic nod to percussion heavy, dance friendly Brazilian batucada while "Sambita" takes samba as well as the theme of "saudade" and mixes it up with a robotic voice and electronic flourishes.
They certainly don't lack a sense of humor. "Ejercicio #16" is exercise instructions in Spanish while the title of "Anorexic Freaks" is self-explanatory. "Tonos Rosa" should make the girls on the dance floor meow with delight. "Corrnman", laced with accordion music and what sounds suspiciously like a xylophone, is a dance song with a capital D.
Kinky's self-titled debut is a fun, intimate dance record that shows yet another bright color in the spectrum of talent from Mexico.
