Starting of her career as a glamour model, Bettie Page gained her worldwide notoriety when she put on her leopard outfit and became a master at being attached in front of Irving Klaw's camera. Bettie Page Bondage Queen starts with an amusing Bondage-how-to, showing you how to get attached while a voice-over gives you some background on that playful trend. We mostly see women in their underwear tying each other up, in various positions, from a Jesus-like posture to less comfortable settings, requiring a sense of gymnastics. There are also women looking at their shoes—fetishism anyone?—and plenty of gentle spanking. It gets a little bit harder, the first time you see a woman kept on a leash, with some goofy mask and a bar between her teeth. Even an innocent chess game—in underwear of course—can turn into some kinky extravaganza. The piece de resistance is obviously when we get to Betty Page's films, which start with a candid dance in a living room, before being attached by other women in various ways, making her some kind of stuntwoman ahead of her time. One of the most famous segments is when she is attached by her arms and feet to a complex cord system and is then slightly elevated—or hung depending on your point of view; the experience proved to be as painful as stated in the commentary, which I listened to (you see how far my professionalism can go!!) You will have to wait a while before seeing the first leather mask and metallic props, but what remains one the most entertaining segments is when a woman is attached, put in the trunk of her car and then driven to the forest where she ends up attached to a tree and spanked. This time, Bettie is dressed in black—a sign—in the role of one of the perpetuators while the victim is in white (underwear) The DVD ends with Betty's famous catfight on the floor while a whip finally comes out of a drawer. If your main question is whether these movies are shocking, the answer is NO. As for nudity, you might see more skin in any episode of Baywatch than here. Still, these films remain an amusing testament of an era and the start of a vogue and if you must own one DVD of Bettie Page, this should be the one.
