A hilarious and raunchy guide giving you all the secrets on how to party in L.A., from making it into exclusive nightclubs, to getting laid and scoring some good dope, Paul Sapiano's Boys & Girls Guide to Getting Down is an ambigous work, part satire, part "real" guide.
With a definite British vibe think 24 Hour Party People & Trainspotting this guide belongs to the local & weird subgenre of "L.A. party films", alongside Swingers, Go, London, etc.. It's certainly not by chance if these kinds of movies are mostly set in the U.K. and in L.A., places where drugs, alcohol and partiers from all over the world abound setting up this kind of film in let's say Switzerland- wouldn't have the same kind of glamourous appeal.
This Boys & Girls Guide was made in Los Angeles, about Los Angeles, for Angelinos and I don't think it would translate well in other parts of the wolrd, except for a few scenesters dreaming of living in L.A.
While making fun of the whole thing and in the end, it is made clear that you are the freak - this is actually a real guide that gives advice that works, from clubbing to booze, drugs and sex. Being familiar with some of these situations and places yeah you can spot me sometime on Cahuenga, at the Beauty Bar among other places, when I'm not busy crashing all the festivals' parties I can attest that all the namedropping and tricks haven't been made up and by looking at the people who came to the premiere, the filmmakers got their stamp of authenticity.
Shot in chapters, Boys & Girls Guide to Getting Down advances fast and is original, supported by a beautiful and talented staff, which doesn't hurt. But what makes it successful is its humor, as long as you have a taste for amorality, provocation and partying. If not, this film isn't for you.
